Farrah Richards Triumphs as Nelson Young Grower of the Year 2024

The 2024 Nelson Young Grower of the Year competition was held on Thursday, 27 June 2024. This annual competition is open to both commercial fruit and vegetable growers from the Nelson region. Contestants were tested on a range of theoretical and practical modules designed to test their horticultural skills and knowledge.

Farrah young grower 4Fairfield Orchards is thrilled to announce that our very own horticultural apprentice, Farrah Richards, has been named Nelson Young Grower of the Year 2024. This prestigious award is a testament to Farrah’s dedication, expertise, and passion for horticulture.

Farrah’s outstanding performance in several key modules led to her overall victory. She took 1st place in the  FMG Risk Analysis activity, demonstrating her ability to assess and mitigate risks in horticultural operations. Her expertise in irrigation was highlighted in her win in the CWS Irrigation activity, where she showcased her knowledge of efficient water management techniques. Additionally, Farrah gained 1st place in the AgFirst Business Analysis module, proving her capability in financial planning and strategic decision-making.

FarrahFarrah’s achievements in these modules resulted in her being announced overall winner of the Nelson Young Grower 2024 at the Gala dinner. She will now advance to compete for the national title in Hawke’s Bay in October, where we are confident she will continue to excel.

CoreyFairfield Orchards is also proud to recognise Corey Rako, who also had a great day at the competition. Corey won the Farmlands Agrichemical and Spray Sheds module, showcasing his proficiency in safe and effective chemical use and storage.

The success of both Farrah and Corey reflects the supportive and nurturing environment at Fairfield Orchards, where we are committed to fostering the growth and development of young talent. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and wish Farrah the best of luck as she prepares for the national competition.
