Operations Manager

Reporting directly to the Directors, the newly established role of Operations Manager is a pivotal leadership opportunity within our business. You will oversee all on-farm operations and crop support functions for apples and gold kiwifruit grown and packed on Fairfield Orchards in Riwaka (Nelson Tasman region), and ensure seamless coordination with key supply partners and internal stakeholders.
Your leadership will guide the Development, Pipfruit, Kiwifruit and Crop Protection teams — ensuring high-performance operations and the delivery of quality product to our cool stores and packhouse, and onwards through our distribution channels. This is a high-impact, hands-on role that requires a blend of pragmatism, innovation, efficiency, and a people-first mindset.
This is your chance to lead a team of 40+ dedicated permanent staff in a dynamic farming environment. We are a Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) and the staff numbers peak at 200+ during the harvest season. You’ll be responsible for ensuring operational performance, staff accountability, and developing team KPIs, all while fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement. Project management skills and strategic oversight are key, as is a commitment to daily operational detail.
What we’re looking for:
We’re seeking an Operations Manager who brings transferable skills, industry know-how, and a passion for growing high-quality fruit. To be successful, you’ll need:
- At least five years of experience in a similar operations, horticulture, or agribusiness management role.
- Solid understanding of horticulture and best-practice crop production.
- A background in farming or a commercial setting with proven leadership experience. The ability to contribute to and implement strategic business plans.
- Knowledge of compliance and regulatory standards (e.g., GAP, land/lease management).
- Strong financial acumen, including budgeting and variance reporting.
- Proven ability to lead large teams and build strong internal and external relationships.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and farm planning software including SNAP Growing.
- Commitment to health and safety practices.
